China harvests 4 more golds at gymnastics World Cup

SHANGHAI, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The FIG 2006 China World Cup Gymnastics rolled down its curtains here on Sunday, with China putting an exclamation mark on its marvelous performance throughout the three-day competition.

Of the day's five finals, China struck four more golds and three silvers for a combined total of eight gold medals, far better than the anticipation of Chinese Gymnastics Team.

China's 18-year-old Pang Panpan, with a nickname of "Oriental Beauty", claimed the titles of beam (15.600) and floor exercise (14.300). Teammate Li Ya finished second (15.450) in the beam, affected by injuries. And the bronze medal went to Russia's Pavlova Anna (15.400).

The women's floor exercise final was both enjoyable and fierce. With an advantage of 0.100 point, China's World Championships winner Cheng Fei outdid Pang Panpan. Cheng had a difficulty score of 6.1, against 5.9 for Pang. And the Chinese duo were followed by Australia's Dria Joura.

In the men's vault, China's Du Wei topped in his debut performance in a global event, with a score of 16.325. Canada's Brandon O'Neill (16.112) and Latvia's Sapronenko Evgeni (16.075) placed the second and the third.

However, China's Feng Zhe, who topped the qualifications, only finished fourth due to faltering landing against a high difficulty degree of seven.

China's last gold medal was obtained in the parallel bars, as well as a silver medal.

Unsatisfied with his performance in the vault, Feng Zhe grabbed the parallel bars title with a clear upper hand over second-placed teammate and Olympic champion Teng Haibing. Russia's Gogotov Dmitriy finished third.

The only final without a Chinese gymnast was the horizontal bar where Russia's Gogotov Dmitriy (15.400) and Likhovitsky Andrey(15.375) occupied the first and the second places. And the third place was shared by Belorussia's Tsarevich and Germany's Juckel Robert.

On Saturday, China won four gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals. The only gold medal that eluded China was the men's floor exercise.

In the men's events, the 2005 pommel horse world champion Xiao Qin took the title with a score of 16.300. Teammate Teng Haibing, the 2004 Athens Olympic winner, and Croatian Robert Seligman finished second and third respectively.

China's Chen Yibing cruised to gold in the rings ahead of Russia's Alexander Safoshkin and China's Yan Yongming.

The men's floor exercise was the Achilles' tendon for the Chinese gymnasts as Du Wei managed for a bronze medal, which was won by Brazil's Diego Hypolito in 15.725. Canada's Brandon O'Neill came second.

In the women's competitions, China's Cheng Fei chose an easier jump but still defended her gold medal in the vault.

China's Xiao Tingting got her first gold medal in the uneven bars, finishing with six "flying" elements perfectly during her debut performance in the international competitions.

As the FIG 2006 China World Cup Gymnastics concluded in Shanghai, China become the biggest winners, followed by Russia and Brazil.

And Beijing will hold another FIG World Cup Gymnastics in two years. Enditem
