Brief History

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is a super-large petroleum and petrochemical entity incorporated in July 1998 on the basis of the former China National Petroleum Company. CNPC is one of the world's leading integrated energy companies.

Major share holders

China National Petroleum Corporation is a national company solely owned by the State.

CNPC, on behalf of the state, controls many subsidiaries, fully owned companies and share-holding companies. PetroChina Company Limited, CNPC's largest listed subsidiary, is responsible for CNPC's domestic operations in the areas of oil and gas exploration and development, oil refining and petrochemical production, marketing, pipeline transportation, and natural gas sales and utilization. PetroChina was publicly listed respectively in Hong Kong and US New York stock market on April, 2000, with CNPC holding 90% of its shares.

Business overview

CNPC serves as China 's largest producer and supplier of crude oil and natural gas, holding a dominant position in domestic petroleum production, processing, and marketing sectors. At the same time, CNPC is also a major producer and supplier of refined oil products and petrochemicals.

As one of the largest service suppliers in the global petroleum and petrochemical industries, CNPC can provide operational services and technical support in such areas as geophysical prospecting, well drilling, logging, well testing, downhole operations, oilfield surface facilities construction, pipeline construction, refining and petrochemical projects, and manufacturing and supply of petroleum equipment.

In 2005, the company ranked 46th by the Fortune Global 500 in terms of revenues, increased from the ranking of 52nd in 2004 .

Top management

Chen Geng: President and Legal person. He is a professorial senior economist with almost 40 years working experience. Chen was graduated from Beijing Economic University of China. In December 1993, Chen worked as General Manager assistant in China National Petroleum Company, and then vice president of China National Petroleum Company in September 1997.  He was appointed vice president of CNPC in February 2001 and elected as the director of PetroChina Company Limited in June the same year. In December 2002, Chen was appointed president of PetroChina Company Limited and then president of CNPC in April 2004.

Jiang Jiemin: Vice president. Mr. Jiang is a senior economist graduated from Shandong University of China and has more than 30 years experience in Chinese petrochemical field. In February 1999, He was appointed General Manager assistant of CNPC and on November the same year he was elected as the director and vice president of PetroChina Company Limited. Mr. Jiang assumed the job as vice-governor of Qinghai province which is in west China in June 2000, and then he was appointed vice president of CNPC in April 2004.

Gong Huzhang: Chief financial officer. Mr. Gong is a senior accountant graduated from Yangzhou Business School of China and has nearly 40 years experience in Chinese petrochemical field. In November 1991, he was appointed chief accountant and deputy director general in Finance Bureau of China National Petroleum Company, and then became the director general in December 1993. Mr. Gong was appointed chief accountant of CNPC in February 1999 and elected as the director of PetroChina Company Limited on December the same year.
