Brief History
Fudan University is a national key university with a long history. It was established by Ma Xiangbo in 1905, initially named Fudan Public School. The name “Fudan” originated from a famous statement, meaning unremitting effort.
In 1917, Fudan Public School was enhanced as "Fudan University", and began to take in undergraduate students. During the 20 years when Li Denghui was President, Fudan formed the structure with three schools of Arts, Science and Business, one Preparatory and one Middle School.
In 1929, Fudan made some adjustments in its departments, adding four Schools or Departments, including School of Journalism, Municipals Department, School of Law and Education Department. Up to now, the totally 17 departments were subjected to the Schools of Arts, Science, Law and Business.
In 1937, Fudan became a comprehensive university with four Schools of Arts, Science, Law and Business, 16 departments, one middle-school, experiment school and two primary schools. Up to the time, Fudan had become one of the most important universities in Southeast China.
In1941, Private Fudan University (Chong qing Campus) was changed to a public university.
