Brief History

T singhua University , located in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing , was established in 1911 on the site of "Qing Hua Yuan" - a former royal garden of the Qing Dynasty. Funded with part of the "Boxer Indemnity," it was at first a preparatory school called "Tsinghua Xuetang" for those students who were sent by the government to study in the United States . The school was renamed " Tsinghua School " in 1912. The university section was instituted in 1925 and undergraduate students were then enrolled. The name " National Tsinghua University " was adopted in 1928, and in 1929 the Research Institute was set up.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China , the university was molded into a polytechnic institution focusing on engineering in the nationwide restructuring of universities and colleges undertaken in 1952. Tsinghua has flourished since 1978, with the re-establishment of the departments in sciences, economics and management, and the humanities. The Tsinghua graduate school has been recognized nationally, ranking first in the National Evaluation of Graduate Schools. The School of Continuing Education makes the best use of modern information technologies, as well as the advanced educational resources at Tsinghua.

Major Scientific Research Achievements in 2004

Tsinghua received the following awards in 2004: 10 National Scientific and Technical Awards; 18 Scientific and Technical Awards and 12 Awards for Philosophy and Social Sciences from the Beijing Municipal Government; 18 National Scientific and Technical Award Nominations by MOE; one 2nd Level Scientific and Technical Award for National Defense; one Key Technology Invention Award from MII. Up to now, the University has received 318 national scientific and technological awards and 1,825 awards at the provincial and ministerial level.

In 2004, 83 projects passed assessments and 74 projects were registered as national technological achievements. The number of patent applications was 830, while the patents granted reached 560. There were 10 patents for national defense technology. And there were 83 copyrights registered for software products.

Administration

Gu Binglin: President. Mr. Gu was born on October 8, 1945 and got his Bachelor degree of Engineering and Engineering Physics in Tsinghua University in 1970, and Ph.D.of Physics in University of Aarhus of Denmark in 1982. Mr. Gu worked as Senior Visiting Scholar at Notre Dame University from 1985 to 1986 and Professor of Physics of Tsinghua University from 1988. From 1993 to 1994, Mr. Gu worked as Visiting Professor at Tohoku University , and then as the Head of Department of Physics of Tsinghua University till 2000. From 2000, Mr. Gu served as Dean of Graduate School, President of Academic Degree Committee, Vice President and President of Tsinghua University respectively.

The current professional positions of Mr. Gu are : Academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, Vice President of the Chinese Physical Society, Member and Director of Physics and Astronomy Senate of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, Member of National Science and Technology Reward Committee, Director of the Steering Committee for Physics and Astronomy, Ministry of Education, President of the Chinese Stereology Committee, Council Member of the Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies.
